    As you said, history is written by the victor, which is why we have so many "horrible" people. Were they horrible, or were they people doing what needed to be done and then painted that way after they "lost"? Mary did what she felt was right. Do I agree with it? No. But that doesn't change the fact that she did what she needed to do.

    Honestly, these guys just made stuff up as they went along, didn't they? Guessing, with no evidence at all, and then recording their foolishness. To our continuing detriment. You've got to wonder if any of them ever had anything at all to do with any woman other than their mothers. Although, things seem to be trending in a more sensible direction these days. Oh yes - safe, healthy, pregnancy and delivery, perfectly healthy baby, perfectly healthy and happy postpartum era and happy family! 💙💙💙🌊🌊🌈🌲

    I would have to go with Mary. She survived and still has descendants to this day. Still Anne did give us one of the greatest queens in history. I feel it's a very close tie, with Mary just nudging a little a-head (pun fully intended!)

    Dear Dr. Kat: Dyslexia and dyscalculia are very common with ADHD, so you may very well have it. I was diagnosed with ADHD at 42 and have always struggled with maths, on a really bad day I could have told you that 2+2=5.... Language and writing, on the other hand, has always been my strongest subjects. So this is clearly an individual thing, which of course, also is the case with any other biolgy-based condition. And being diagnosed with ADHD and getting medication (Ritalin/Concerta didn't do much other than make me wander around in a mental fog and make all my joints ache), specifically dexamphetamine, made me feel like I had had a brain transplant!! Now I am able to stay on topic for more than 60 seconds before my mind and mouth wander on to some (to me) associated topic and so on and so forth. The numbers thing, though, has only improved slightly. But if were you, I would absolutely get evaluated, and the same goes for all present and future offspring! A friend of mine had an appointment for having two of her three children evaluated and the people she met went: "Uuuhm, we think we will have a look at you first.". It was that obvious to them. All three of them got positively diagnosed. Going undiagnosed far into adulthood is to a large degree connected to developing anxiety and depression, hence my advice to be certain sooner than later for everyone involved! Wish you well with your pregnancy and birth! And forever more the same for all of you! ❤

    on "fornication under consent of the king", yes it is a myth, language doesn't work like that, but I can see both a reason and a bureaucratic mechanism for a...erm..."bedroom permission slip". so, in the medieval & early modern period, religion was treated differently from today. while today, it's generally accepted that faith is a personal matter, in centuries past deviation from the "correct" form of Christianity was seen as dangerous. a morally righteous country would prosper, while a country that angered God could suffer military losses, disease & bad harvests. under such a belief model, any monarch would have a vested interest in the moral behaviour of their citizens. I put it to you that a marriage certificate could be described as a couple's "bedroom permission slip" if we were so inclined.

    Dr. Kat, I've heard several historians, including Alison Weir, say that the account of Henry's 1536 jousting accident that says he was unconscious for 2 hours comes from the Imperial ambassador to Rome, Dr. Ortiz, who got it from the French ambassador to Rone, who heard it from someone at the French court, and that it can't be trusted. They say that the account of both Chapuys and Wriothesly say that the king and his horse did fall together but that Henry wasn't hurt at all. These historians tend to believe Chapuys and Wriothesly and claim that there was most likely no head injury at all. Other historians, like Lucy Worsley, present the idea that Henry suffered a severe head injury as a foregone conclusion everyone "knows" happened. What is your opinion on these differing viewpoints, and the trustworthiness of Dr. Ortiz's vs. Chapuys' and Wriothesly's accounts?

    • @ReadingthePast
      @ReadingthePast 20 годин тому

      I think there was an accident, he was very badly hurt. Having spoken to medical professionals about it, he almost certainly could not have been “unconscious” as we understand it because he would have required medical interventions that had not been invented yet for him to survive. So I’m not sure about whether that means ruling out a head injury 🤷🏻‍♀️ I do think the accident changed him, but possibly only in as much as it exacerbated his pre-existing personality.

    Fun facts about infectious diseases (but not actually really fun); the signs and symptoms of a disease can change over time. Syphilis for example, looked a lot more like Yaws; open sores eating into the bones and rapidly. Today, it causes a small sore that heals up, and it causes slow destruction of the organs, including the brain.

    I think the Leviticus passage has been unfortunately misunderstood by Christians outside the context of the Holy Temple. A woman was not “unclean” or repulsive during menstruation, but merely could not ascend the Temple Mount because of it. Menstruation symbolized death (loss of potential life) and therefore could not mix with Life (God’s Presence in the Temple). Ritual impurity was transmissible, as was purity, so a woman needed to be careful around others who wanted/needed to ascend. But this sort of ritual impurity was not catastrophic nor permanent.

    I went to the Tutankhamun exhibit in 2012 when it was in Malmoe and i enjoyed it greatly. I think that the Original artifacts should allways be in their native cultural home countries, and the western museums could have replicas, at least for me, a very good and exact replica, does not take away the experience when they are put in and arranged in their correct historical and cultural context. Museums today should concentrate more on the context and exsperience and give the visitor a full senses exsperience, that is how you learn and connect with the history. And i am a huge history nerd with Highly-functional Autism and with the history as special intrests.

    Honestly, I think it's really likely that she just died accidentally. Bad stairs combined with clothing that lends itself to those sorts of accidents makes for a compelling answer. Of course, the conspiracy angle makes for the better story and it's quite amusing that we have so many people who could have been implicated in it, and all quite convincingly. If anything it would be amusing if it turned out they had all been plotting against her, and then she died before any plans could be enacted.

    I've always loved the history of this time period. Of course, the White Ship accident and loss of the male heir became the basis of the fictional book "The Pillars of the Earth," with the fight between Stephen and Matilda effecting a monastery that was building a cathedral, which was more historical fascination to me.
